Hackensack NJ to the far suburbs of Sydney, Aus
Here it is, a slice of Hackensack NJ, where the people flee when they can't pay the New York City rent. You're still talking about a too expensive, debt-ridden lifestyle. Of course, some of these houses are going down below $400,000. A 3-bedroom house in Little Ferry, the next down South of Hackensack is now selling for $330,000.
So, the bubble is beginning to deflate, even here around New York. Just like the people in Sydney, Aus, have to flee to outer suburbs, whether Manly, or North Balgowlah, so people try to survive in Hackensack, Ridgefield Park, NJ, and further out, in Paterson, Clifton, NJ, there are so many little towns.
You still have to have one or even two cars for the family, pay usually part of your health insurance, it is murder. A regional median household income of $55,000, often with two more more people working means also childcare expenses often.
The attempt is still to push the McMansions, the McDonald's food like repetitive ready made mansion on 1/2 or 1/4 acre lots. For instance, in Old Tappan, a fancy town in NJ, towards the NY upstate border, you can still by a McMansion, on a cul-de-sac, in a suburban fantasy for $USD 1,470,000.
Yes, check it out at Ingleside Estates, Weichert Realtors, Alpine/Closter office, ask for Isabelle Ferrito or Henry Kim, at 201-767-8600. After all on an ARM (Adjustable Rate Mortgage) with IO (Interest Rate Only) payments, you can probably live there 3-5 years, before the big principal payments hit you, the negaitve amortization kicks in and you are knocked flat on your back.
I still may have a fantasy of moving to Australia to be a low-income
American ex-pat, but now I'm thinking about places like Blue Mountains. There's a lovely sounding town called Leura, only 66 miles from Sydney. But how much is the gas around there? Or maybe, Medlow Bath, 93 miles west of Sydney, which "has its own railroad station", a second-hand book store, and according Frommer's Australia Guide, a lovely hotel, the Hydro Majestic Hotel, tel 02-4788-1002, where you get great views of the Megalong Valley., but it's not cheap...
